Each tablet contains 500 mg of levofloxacin (equivalent to levofloxacin hemihydrate).
Levofloxacin is a synthetic antibacterial agent belonging to the fluoroquinolone class and is the S(-) enantiomer of the racemic active substance ofloxacin.
As an antibacterial agent of the fluoroquinolone class, levofloxacin acts on the DNA–DNA gyrase complex and topoisomerase IV.
Indications
Ovel-500 Tablet is indicated for the treatment of infections in adults, including acute bacterial sinusitis, uncomplicated cystitis, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (including bronchitis), and severe skin and soft tissue infections.
For the infections listed above, Ovel-500 Tablet should only be used when the use of antibacterial agents commonly recommended for the initial treatment of these infections is considered inappropriate.
In addition, Ovel-500 Tablet is indicated for the treatment of acute pyelonephritis, complicated urinary tract infections, chronic bacterial prostatitis, pneumonia, and inhalational anthrax (for post-exposure prophylaxis and curative treatment).
Ovel-500 Tablet may also be used to complete the course of treatment in patients who have shown improvement during initial intravenous treatment with levofloxacin.
