Amoxicillin 250

Amoxicillin 250

Amoxicillin
Antibacterials for systemic use

Each capsule contains 250 mg of amoxicillin (in the form of amoxicillin trihydrate).

Amoxicillin is a semi-synthetic penicillin that inhibits one or more enzymes in the biosynthetic pathway of bacteria involved in the synthesis of peptidoglycan, an essential structural component of the bacterial cell wall. Inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis leads to weakening of the cell wall, which is usually followed by cell lysis and death.

Amoxicillin is susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamases produced by resistant bacteria; therefore, organisms that produce these enzymes are not included in the activity spectrum of amoxicillin alone.

Indications

Amoxicillin is indicated for the treatment of the following infections in adults and children:

  • Acute bacterial sinusitis
  • Acute otitis media
  • Acute streptococcal tonsillitis and pharyngitis
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia
  • Acute cystitis
  • Asymptomatic bacteriuria during pregnancy
  • Acute pyelonephritis
  • Typhoid and paratyphoid fever
  • Dental abscess with spreading cellulitis
  • Prosthetic joint infections
  • Helicobacter pylori eradication
  • Lyme disease

Amoxicillin is also indicated for the prophylaxis of endocarditis. Official guidelines on the appropriate use of antibacterial agents should be taken into consideration.
