Each tablet contains 500 mg of metronidazole.
Metronidazole has antiprotozoal and antibacterial activity. It is active against Trichomonas vaginalis, Gardnerella vaginalis, and other protozoa such as Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia, as well as against anaerobic bacteria.
The nitro group of metronidazole accepts electrons, resulting in the formation of toxic reduced compounds. These compounds interact with cellular proteins and DNA, ultimately causing cell death.
Indications
- Prevention of postoperative infections, particularly those caused by anaerobic bacteria, especially Bacteroides and anaerobic streptococcal species;
- Treatment of septicemia, bacteremia, peritonitis, brain abscess, necrotizing pneumonia, osteomyelitis, postpartum sepsis, pelvic abscess, pelvic cellulitis, and postoperative wound infections, as well as infections in which pathogenic anaerobic bacteria have been isolated;
- Urogenital trichomoniasis in women and men caused by Trichomonas vaginalis;
- Bacterial vaginosis (also known as nonspecific vaginitis, anaerobic vaginosis, or Gardnerella vaginalis infection);
- All forms of amoebiasis (intestinal and extraintestinal disease and asymptomatic cyst carriers);
- Giardiasis;
- Acute ulcerative gingivitis;
- Acute dental infections (e.g., acute pericoronitis and acute apical infections);
- Anaerobic infections of leg ulcers and pressure ulcers;
- Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection associated with peptic ulcer disease, as part of triple therapy.
Metronidazole has antiprotozoal activity and is effective against parasites such as Trichomonas vaginalis, Entamoeba histolytica, and Giardia lamblia. It is also active against anaerobic bacteria and is used in the treatment of nonspecific vaginal infections and wounds caused by anaerobic bacteria.
