Each vial contains 1 g of meropenem (in the form of a mixture containing not less than 66% meropenem and sodium carbonate).
Meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic for parenteral use. It is stable against human dehydropeptidase-1 (DHP-1) and does not require the addition of a DHP-1 inhibitor.
Meropenem exerts its bactericidal activity by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
All methicillin-resistant staphylococci are resistant to meropenem.
Indications
Meropenem is indicated for the treatment of the following infections in adults and children aged 3 months and older:
- Pneumonia and nosocomial pneumonia
- Urinary tract infections
- Pre- and postpartum infections
- Bronchopulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis
- Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
- Acute bacterial meningitis
- Complicated intra-abdominal infections
Meropenem is also indicated as monotherapy for the treatment of bacterial infections suspected in patients with febrile neutropenia, or for the treatment of patients with bacteremia occurring in association with any of the infections listed above.
