Each 1 mL of the solution contains 20 mg of homatropine hydrobromide.
Homatropine, a belladonna alkaloid, has an anticholinergic effect that blocks the response of the pupillary sphincter muscle and ciliary muscle to cholinergic stimulation. Mydriasis (pupil dilation) and cycloplegia (paralysis of accommodation) are the resulting physiological effects.
Mydriasis is generally required for examination of the retina and optic disc, as well as for the treatment of acute inflammatory diseases of the pupil and uveal tract.
Cycloplegia is required for the measurement of refractive errors and following cataract surgery.
Indications
Homatropine is a medium- to long-acting mydriatic and cycloplegic used for the treatment of refractive errors and inflammatory diseases of the uveal tract. It is used when mydriasis is required before and after surgery. In certain cases of axial lens opacity, it may be used as an optical aid.
